Philanthropy Activity and Donor Listings

This year’s philanthropy activity focused on a wide variety of opportunities to engage with valued donors and help patients in need. The Development Office is pleased to share these highlights from the year:

Donors Gather to Celebrate Center of Excellence Grand Opening!

A successful $7.5 million building campaign made it possible to bring the Glickman Lauder Center of Excellence in Autism and Developmental Disorders to the community. The center provides the first lifespan-oriented, integrated, treatment, research, and professional training center for people with autism and developmental disorders in Northern New England. In May, nearly 90 donors and friends gathered to celebrate the center’s opening and tour the impressive facility. Guests heard remarks from Governor Janet Mills, the center’s Director and Vice President, Developmental Disorders Services Dr. Matthew Siegel, and Judy Glickman Lauder, campaign building naming donor.

Signs of Hope Provides Welcome Boost for MBH Annual Fund!

In July, more than 150 friends of Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH) gathered at Portland Country Club for the annual Signs of Hope fundraiser hosted by MBH and long-time supporter Sheri Boulos. Remarks were given by MBH President Kelly Barton, Sheri Boulos, Beth Dube, NP, Director, Psychiatric Services Administration and MBH Board of Directors, and Lucy Tucker, MBH Board of Directors and Chair, Development Committee. Featured speaker, Jessica Gil, shared the story of her son, a young man saved by our programs, and how the care MBH provides has improved the lives of their entire family. The event raised more than $138,000 from generous host committee members, corporate sponsors, and donors.

Life, Animated Screening Brings Donors and Friends Together

On the evening before the Glickman Symposium in October*, Glickman Lauder Center of Excellence campaign donors and symposium attendees attended a film screening of Life, Animated. The film is based on journalist Ron Suskind’s 2014 book Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism. The book tells the story of his son, Owen Suskind, who struggled with autism and learned how to communicate with the outside world through his love of Disney films.

*The Glickman Family Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Symposium brings together health care professionals for a day of learning each fall. The program is made possible by the generosity of Maine Behavioral Healthcare donors Judith Glickman Lauder and the late Albert Brenner Glickman. The symposium’s topic last year was, “Emotional and Behavioral Challenges in Youth with Autism and Developmental Disorders.”

Big Hearted Donor Steps Up to Help Patients

It was a stormy night, but that didn’t stop close to 100 guests from attending Hearts & Soles last November at Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland. The event raised over $5,000 for the Holiday Partners program (see accompanying story), which helped provide cold-weather footwear for patients at Spring Harbor Hospital . The family-friendly event was made possible by the generosity of Development Committee member Jill Anne Metcalf who hosted the fundraiser.

Holiday Partners Brings Joy to Patients

The annual Holiday Partners program benefits patients spending the December holidays at Spring Harbor Hospital and clients at Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH) residential homes. We are grateful to UNUM and Woodard & Curran for their long-term workplace gift drives and MBH care team members, and many donors in the community who donated items through MBH’s Amazon Wishlist. Cash donations help purchase items for filling gift bags with winter clothing, journals, blankets, and other essentials. Our various Holiday Partner fundraising benefits and gift drives raised close to $20,000!

MBH received a $5,000 award from WPOR’s Christmas for Kids Fund, which allowed MBH to provide holiday gifts to many more children.
