MaineHealth Values

A Message from the President

Kelly Barton, President

Kelly Barton, President

Welcome to the 2021 Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH) annual report. Providing behavioral health care is, even in the best of times, never easy. As we continue to emerge from an unprecedented public health emergency, I am especially grateful for our care team members. It is their ongoing commitment, ingenuity and professionalism that drives the delivery of quality behavorial health care to our patients and communities.

This year’s accomplishments reflect how our MBH care teams exemplify our MaineHealth values: patient centeredness, respect, integrity, excellence, ownership and innovation. As you read the amazing stories, you will be inspired by the work we’re doing and the opportunities that lie ahead.

This year, we realigned our ambulatory services department to provide our care team and patients with a better understanding of all the available MBH resources. This has improved our management of the services, maximized efficiencies, and provided smoother transitions and quality of care for our patients. We also kept our focus on our Zero Suicide initiative, providing risk assessment training to 87% of all eligible care team members and educational training across the broader MaineHealth care system.

We have made great strides in becoming a data-driven organization that relies on quantitative and qualitative metrics to set goals, identify priorities, and inform quality improvement. We sought to increase our overall care team engagement by .11 and implemented communication, leadership, and training strategies toward this goal. Our efforts were validated by a .21 increase in overall care team engagement and a .13 increase in provider engagement. I am proud of our care team members whose engagement work has been transformational.

Speaking of transformational, I take this opportunity to thank Mary Jane Krebs, Spring Harbor Hospital President, for her service and leadership. If you haven’t heard, Mary Jane will be retiring this year, leaving a void in our organization and hearts. Mary Jane has served in clinical and operational leadership roles throughout her career and led us through periods of great change during her Spring Harbor tenure that began in 2014. Through it all, she provided care team members with steady and supportive guidance informed by her experience and vast knowledge. She has inspired others and improved the lives of thousands of people with behavioral health needs in Maine. We wish her continued health and happiness!

Regards,
